Advantages: A great fun read
Disadvantages: Shame its not longer
A similar tale to the classic work of Cervantes - Don Quixote. Greene explores his feelings on religion and politics in a charming and quirky take. Set in Post Franco Spain a simple parish priest happens upon a stranded motorist while fetching a supply of wine from the local co-operative (wine co-operative not co-op supermarket!) A series of events unfold which lead to his escape for a "holiday" with his friend - an avowed marxist and recently deposed mayor. A good book which can be quickly read for fun or contemplated at greated depth depending on the readers needs. Also set to film (in a v. difficult to obtain VHS format) staring the now deceased Alec Guiness - a close friend of Greenes.

- 04/10/00 The Power and the Glory is also about a priest, but rather darker - set during the Mexican persecution. For the lighter 'entertainments' Travels with my Aunt or Our Man in Havanna are both very good. |

- 22/08/00 Like a lot of Greene's books (and I do like a lot of them), this can be a quick read or a lot deeper. No matter how much he uses crises of faith I never tire of reading. |
