Advantages: Gripping read

Disadvantages: Need to read earlier work

I like the writing style of Jonathon Kellerman and in particular I enjoy his books that feature the child psychologist Dr Alex Delaware and the Los Angeles detective Milo Sturgis. The two were originally bought together as Delaware consults on cases for the Los Angeles police and the two have built up a friendship as well as a professional relatonship. This was helped by the fact that Delaware was someone who accepted the fact that Sturgis is gay while his fellow officers did not.

At the start of this book the two men are investigating the murder of a doctor at the Starkweather Institute for the Criminally Insane. The killing is similar to a brutal murder of a Hollywood actor (not a famous one mind) that Sturgis was unable to solve a few months back. The case is going nowhere until one of the inmates who has been mute for many years sudden;y utters a phrase that opens up a new line of inquiry for the two to investigate. Due to his crimes his nickname is The Monster from which the title of the book is drawn.

This is a disturbing fast paced book that has a well constructed plot that really keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. I like the way the relationship between the two central characters is maintained and while it is not a typical buddy buddy relatonship there are some elements of that style of light easy going banter between the two however overall the book has a dark feel to it which is what makes it so good in my opinion.

This is not the first book to feature the pair and as such if you have not read any of Kellermans work before I would recommend reading the in order as the personal life of Delaware is a feature of these books and to understand what is going on you would benefit from reading the earlier work.

Overall this is a great psychological thriller which is well worth reading.

Summary: Great thriller
