Advantages: great characters

Disadvantages: too short

My journey in the wonderful world of Moomins continues with the 'Moominland In Midwinter' novel by Tove Jansson.

This particular book was first published in 1958 and has been released in numerous editions since that date. The Moomins are hippo like creatures who live in the enchanting Moominvalley. A forest like wilderness, inhabited by all manner of strange creatures.

What Is It About:

A cover of thick snow and ice lands upon the Moominvalley and it isn't long before Moomintroll is exploring and attempting to ski. He is joined by some new friends in this book, as we meet the bizarre Too Ticky and the mysterious Lady Of The Cold.

The book is broken up into six easy to read chapters. At 133 pages it is quite a brisk read and you will find yourself finishing it very quickly. I am not sure whether this one has the initial magic of some of the earlier Moomin books. Maybe I was reading them all too quickly and should have allowed a short breather in between. Nonetheless, Jansson revisits old favourites like The Hemulen and Snufkin and continues to weave spellbinding tales. There are often morals attached to the stories, which makes them useful for adults reading aloud to children.

This novel comes with the usual selection of artwork and it is as beautiful as ever. Every other page or so you will find articulate drawings of the characters and the scenery. There is even a map, which means you can visualise where things take place in Moominvalley.

If you wish to purchase this Moomin book, then you will spend about five pounds if you buy it new. It is one of the later books in the series, so I advise getting the others first. The books are pure escapism for young and old and you won't be disappointed.
