Mr Cheerful is the 43rd of the popular Mr Men children's books and the last one to be created by Roger Hargreaves. The books were a favourite of mine when I was a child, and now my son loves them as well. The author started writing them in 1971 after his son asked him what a tickle looked like and he drew it, resulting in the first book in the series, Mr Tickle. His son, Adam, continued writing and illustrating the stories after Roger's death in 1988, and this is the fourth of Roger's books that Adam published after his death.

Mr Cheerful is a happy, round orange ball with a big grin, little yellow button nose and a yellow and turquoise hat. Everyone around him found his cheerfulness infectious and couldn't be happy when he was there. He is always cheerful, about everything, apart from one little thing, which he keeps a secret. One day, Little Miss Splendid meets up with him and finds out his secret. What is it, and can Little Miss Splendid make him feel good about it?

This is a lovely book to end the originals created by Roger Hargreaves, as it is very good to be cheerful. Hargreaves shows us with this one that people love us for who we are, not what we look like, and that it is what is within and how we affect people that count the most. Little Miss Splendid helps Mr Cheerful see this. The illustrations are colourful and vibrant and are on the right hand pages and the writing is one the left hand pages.

The Mr Men books retail at £2.50 each and are available from most bookshops. I recommend them all as well as the Little Miss books.
