Advantages: A lovely bedtime read

Disadvantages: None

As those of you who read a lot of my reviews will have gathered by now the Mr Men and Little Miss books are well loved by me. If you aren't one of those people then I shall simply reaffirm this. I love Mr Men and Little Miss. I always have done and I know I always will do. Luckily I am not alone in my love for them either as for many years now both the Mr Men and Little Miss collections have been firm favourites for children.

The Mr Men series itself contains 46 books and the book I am reviewing today, Mr Funny, is number 18 in that series. Mr Worry is a roundish pale green character with a bright red circular nose. On his feet is a pair of clown style red and white shoes and on his head a clown style yellow and blue hat with a flower poking out of it. He also wears a pair of bright yellow gloves. This picture of him can be seen in the centre of the books plain white cover. Above this picture is his name, which is printed in block black capitals.

The back of the small square book is also white but this time contains smaller pictures of all the other Mr Men characters alongside their names and numbers. In my opinion this is a fantastic feature, as it makes it easier to find out which book to purchase next. The price of the book is also located on the back (next to the barcode). My copy has the price tag £1.25 but the book currently retails for £1.99 although it can be purchased for less if you shop around.

Mr Funny's story begins by telling us that Mr Funny lived in a teapot and that this teapot suited him nicely. One day after eating his lunch Mr Funny decided to go for a drive in his car, which looks like a shoe. As he drove along he made everyone who saw him laugh including a worm at the side of the road. It was whilst he was driving that he saw as sign that said "To the Zoo" and decided that a trip to the zoo would be fun.

Unfortunately for Mr Funny when he arrived at the gates the zookeeper informed him that the zoo was closed because all the animals had colds and were feeling sorry for themselves. Mr Funny thought for a while and then exclaimed that maybe he could cheer them up. What would Mr Funny do and more importantly would it cheer the animals up?

This story like all the other stories in both the Mr Men and Little Miss series are written in the perfect way for children. The stories are simple enough for young children to understand yet don't patronise by being too simplistic. Furthermore they are written in a brilliant format with writing on the left hand side of a double page spread and fantastic colourful pictures on the right hand side. These pictures are superb for children as they can be quite humorous but also ensure that their attention is kept focused on the story whilst it is being read.

The story itself is relatively short and can easily be read in 5-10 minutes. This makes Mr Funny the perfect book for bedtime reading as well as for reading in a mid-morning or mid-afternoon break.

Mr Funny is one of my favourite Mr Men characters and I know that this is the case for many other people too. For this reason I would highly recommend his story to others.

Summary: The story of a well-loved Mr Men
