Advantages: Great short fun story
Disadvantages: Small text
Mr Jelly is a wobbly jelly shaped character in pink who is part of the large Mr Men family.
The book has a white cover with a picture of Mr Jelly in pink on the front and the title in black on the top. The back of the book has a collection of pictures showing some of the characters available in the collection.
THE STORY
The book begins by telling us that Mr Jelly is frightened of everything and anything. The slightest little thing would make him wobbly, shake and turn to jelly. So we are told that Mr Jelly lives far away from everyone else in the middle of a wood.
Mr Jelly is asleep in bed when a leaf falls from a tree outside and gently brushes against his bedroom window which wakes him with a start. He cries out what a disaster it is and how his house is falling down. He then hides under his bedclothes.
Later on when he realises that his house is not falling down he comes out from under the bedclothes and goes to make his breakfast.
As he is making his breakfast the milk and cereal goes pop and he gets that scared he hides under the table.
Mr Jelly later goes for a walk where a worm says good morning to him which scares him so much he jumps up into a tree. When he finally is brave enough to come down from the tree he continues his walk and comes out of the woods into an empty field.
Is the field empty or is there something there to scare Mr Jelly and turn him to jelly?
MY OPINION
This is a very fun story and my children enjoy seeing where Mr Jelly hides when he gets scared.
The book is set out in a very easy to read way with the story on the left hand page and the illustrations on the right hand side.
The story is very easy to follow and my boys are kept involved by looking at the nice bright colourful pictures.
The text is rather small like all the others in the collection so my eldest is not too keen on helping with the words. I feel that if they were printed slightly larger it would encourage younger children to help with the reading.
INFO
This book has been written by Roger Hargreaves and published by Egmont Books Limited.
The retails price for this book is £1.99 but they are available in Wilkinson's for £1.49 and they are currently on offer at Morrisons with 2 books for £3.00 which is a great buy.
I would definitely recommend this book for all young children as it has a great easy to follow story which is not too long so is ideal for a bedtime story.

- 29/02/08 I bought the set when I worked at WHS many years ago, they were only about 1.25 then, so the price hasn't increased much, and these books will be popular for many years. Nicola x |
