Advantages: Great kids' book

Disadvantages: None

Mr Jelly is the 15th Mr Men in the popular series by Roger Hargreaves. It is also published in some places as Mr Nervous. It deals with the emotion of nervousness and how jumpy some people can be. It also deals with trust. The Mr Men books were a favourite of mine as a child and my son now loves them as well.

Mr Jelly is probably one of the easier ones to draw, as jelly is an actual thing. Even so, the drawing is done well and cleverly, using a vibrant pink colour and motion lines around his body to denote the wibbly wobbly effect of jelly. He also has a wide open mouth to show being scared all the time.

Mr Jelly lives in the middle of a wood as he is too scared of people and needs to live away from them. He is frightened by a falling leaf and then makes a mountain out of a molehill by thinking his house is going to fall down. A worm says good morning which makes him jump and then he enters a big field where he thinks there couldn't possibly be anything in there to scare him. Or could there?

Mr Jelly deals with being easily scared of something but also about making things bigger than they seem and being paranoid. It teaches kids that there is no need to be scared of little things and events. The book is lovely, as are they all. The illustrations are vibrant and colourful, and are on the right hand pages, and the writing is on the left hand pages.

The Mr Men books retail at £2.50 each and are available from most bookshops. I recommend them all as well as the Little Miss books.

Summary: Mr Men No.15 Mr Jelly
