... very shallow, mid twenties woman looking for Mr Right. As you can tell from the title, there are plenty of Mr Maybe’s but no Mr Right. It follows her from her romance to a skint but sexy Nick, and his commitment phobia, through to the deadly boring, sexually naïve Ed, who is far from a commitment phobic, and appears to have the ideals of the Victorian era. Our heroine, Libby, seems to have been brought up in a suburbia which hasn’t existed since the 1930’s and her parents are more akin to my Grandparents than a mo...more

I originally read Mr. Maybe on my bus ride to Tulsa Oklahoma. However, due to lack of sleep and the mayhem around me I was unable to concentrate on it too much. So after reading it for a second time last week I realized that this was a pretty good Chick-Lit book. Mr. Maybe is written by Jane Green, who has a previous book out called Jemima J (which I rather liked but not as much as this one). Mr. Maybe has 357 pages, so it is a decent length, and is published by Broadway Books. Now we all know what these Chick Lit books are all about: usually a twenty-something (sometimes thirty-something) girl has some kind of job in the publishing industry, is ...

Mr Maybe was the third book by the author, Jane Green. She has since gone on to write more, but this is the first of them that I have read, and follows Jemima J, and Straight Talking. Mr Maybe was first published in 1999, and so reading it in 2006 I have noticed that the book has actually dated, as it mentions fashion and politicians. This can be off putting as I want to imagine that this is a contemporary book, and instead I have been caught off guard by thinking about news events from six years ago. Mr Maybe is in the genre of Chicklit, following close on the heels (or should that be bandwagon?) of Bridget Jones, however, where the first ...

As readers of some of my previous reviews will know that I am a fan of chick lit. I had not heard of Jane Green until a few women I work with started a small book club where we swap novels and reduce the cost of keeping up to date with new releases. We pay 10p per book, and use the fund to buy a new release when we get enough money in our little pot, otherwise we just pass around books we buy ourselves. It is a great idea which more people should try. I have been introduced to some books I would not even have considered before. The focus of the book is Libby, a twenty something career girl, working as a publicist, and someone who judges her men on their material ...
