Advantages: Brilliant story and illustrations
Disadvantages: None
When Roger Hargreaves, creator of the Mr Men, passed away, his son Adam continued his legacy, finishing the production of a number of books his father had started. In 1998, Adam released a series of stories featuring some of his father's most memorable Mr Men characters, and this is the 4th book in the series of individual Mr Men stories.
It follows the simialr style of the original series, with the words of the story on one page and the rich, colourful illustrations on the opposite page. The contours of the illustrations are very soft, and with the rich colours, I find this to be more appealing to kids than other styles of illustrations.
The story itself follows the accident prone Mr Bump, as he falls out of window and loses his memory. Luckily, he finds someone who can identify him and help him remember things. The only problem is that it is Mr Muddle who he comes across, who calls him Mr Careful. This, of course, is exactly what Mr Bump is not, and confuses him even more.
Mr Bump then, thinking he's Mr Careful, offers his assistance to Mrs Packet, and drops her eggs. Simillar things happen with Mr Bottle the milkman and Mr Brush the painter. You can see where this is going, can't you!!! Will Mr Bump remember who he is and stop causing havoc? Or is he destined to forever wonder why on earth he is called Mr Careful?
This is a very simple and very entertaining story. The Mr Men series in general is impressive, mainly because of the simple nature, and this book is very appealing to kids. My son is more than happy to read it, and he tries to read the words himself, as a 5 year old learning to read. He finds it easier to associate with a story when there are relevant pictures on the opposing pages, and this style certainly helps promote reading.
The Mr Men books all retail at £2.99, although you will often find that shops stock them for £1.50 or £2 or thereabouts. These special Mr Men books are usually treated a bit differently, so don't worry if you pay more for them than the regular series. I would highly recommend them, as they're a very original and high quality series, with Adam Hargreaves carrying on his father's work.
Summary: The 4th in a special Mr Men library series
