Advantages: Great children's story, support charity,
Disadvantages: none
Toby has loved listening to the vast collection of Mr Men and Little Miss stories, so a few weeks ago when Comic Relief was on; we saw that there was a new promotion book called 'Mr Funny's Red Nose Day'
We went in search of the book and found it for sale in Sainsbury's for £2.50, at least £2.00 of this will go to comic relief - adding to the millions of pounds raised to support children in Africa and UK.
The book itself is exactly the same size as the other Mr Men and is a paper back book. Written and illustrated by Adam Hargreaves, and following the original concept by Roger Hargreaves, it has the same white background front page with the character on the front, a slight difference is that Mr Funny's red nose is actually raised slightly and glitters as you move the book.
As with other Mr Men books the writing is on the left hand page and a picture on the right, the writing is fairly small but there are never that many words on each page, the repetition of words also makes it easier for a child as they get older to take an interest in reading.
The story starts off with us meeting Mr Funny, who sleeps in a boat shaped bed, lives in a teapot shaped house and drives a shoe shaped car, and loves to makes people laugh, and thought he was very good at making people laugh until he met Mr Grumpy! Mr Grumpy never smiled, laughed or grinned, Mr Funny tried everything he could to make him laugh: pulling funny faces, showed him funny things and even took him to his odd house.
Once there Mr Funny went to make Mr Grumpy a cup of tea, when he came back Mr Grumpy noticed something different: Mr Funny's nose had grown!! (Only a little bit though.) Mr Grumpy's mouth at this point didn't even turn down at the edges.
Mr Funny forgot the sugar bowl, and as he returned his nose was even larger, Mr Grumpy saw this and he actually smiled. Once Mr Funny returned again after forgetting the teaspoons Mr Grumpy couldn't believe it, he snorted and started to chuckle, then giggle and laugh, he laughed so much tears ran down his cheeks. The really funny thing was that Mr Funny's nose was so big he had fallen forward onto it and couldn't get up.
Toby loved having this story read to him, he noticed Mr Grumpy's mouth changing and loved watching Mr Funny's nose getting bigger and bigger. During the story whilst Mr Funny is showing Mr Grumpy funny things like a dog taking his pet worm for a walk and a giraffe wearing wellies, Toby always points to the picture saying "that's silly"!!
This is a great book to add to any Mr Men or Little Miss collection, we have read it several times without tiring of the story, there are plenty of opportunities to talk about the pictures, talk about what might happen next and emotions such as happy sad etc. I was more than happy to buy this book, not only to add to Toby's book shelf but to support such a worthwhile cause, raising money for people less fortunate than ourselves.
You may not be able to buy this book for long, so go and find yourself a copy to add to your Mr Men collection and help support Comic Relief.
