Advantages: Great book for kids just starting to read, good story and illustrations
Disadvantages: None really
This is one of the books in the follow up series to the original Mr Men series of children's books written by Roger Hargreaves. Following his death, his son Adam continued his work, and has published this series of books, which take some of the favourite Mr Men characters and gives us some extra stories.
This Mr Greedy story sees the larger than life Mr Greedy atg home, and explains how he has got so heavy that he has started breaking things by being heavy handed, clumsy and just generally too heavy. Disgruntled and rather miserable, he heads off to Mr Uppity's house, where he has been invited for lunch. What will happen when he gets there? Will he be destined to have a miserable time at Mr Uppity's house, or will he find that this particular cloud has a silver lining?!
It's quite a good tale, and it teaches us that no matter someone's physical appearance, or how clumsy or heavy they may be, it doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing. This is generally the same for all the Mr Men books, as well as the Little Miss books, too.
The other thing that is consistent with other books is the presentation. Each spread has one page of easy to read text, with the opposite page featuring a rich and vibrantly colourful illustration. The contours of the artwork are curved and soft, and the rich and deep colours add to this to gvie a relaxed and enjoyable feel to the books. They are great for getting your kid to start reading, and my 5 year old likes reading through them, as he finds them interesting as well.
Overall, I recommend all of the books in the series. This one is another very good tale, and a great addition to the Mr Men New Library series. It is available generally for £2.99, but is easy enough to find in retailers for the lesser price of around half that amount. Recommended.
Summary: A good addition to the Mr Men New Library series

- 13/07/09 I adore Mr Men. Mr Silly and Mr Tickle were my early childhood faves. Not much else could be said here and I agree about the quality; the illustrations have always been vibrant and they stand up well to years of abuse too, unlike my old books! |
