Advantages: A fun story
Disadvantages: NONE
I loved the Mr Men for many, many years. For as long as I can remember in fact. As a young child I will admit I was positively obsessed with them and had Mr. Men everything, from pyjamas, to mugs, to wall charts and clocks.
The Mr Men series is a collection of 46 stories written first by Roger Hargreaves and then later by his son Adam. The book I am now going to review, Mr Nonsense, is number 33 in this series.
The book itself is square in shape and white in colour. On the front is a picture of Mr Nonsense and above him is printed his name in block, black capitals. Mr Nonsense is a very bright and vibrant looking character. He is bright yellow in colour and round in shape. He has a large circular red nose and wears bright blue gloves and a green hat. Furthermore he wears rather large blue and white shoes.
If you turn the small book over you will find smaller pictures of all the characters within the series, each with their number and their name printed below. This is a great feature because it means that you can easily keep track of the stories that you have read and the ones that you have left to read.
On opening the book you will see that this story follows the same printed format as all the others. It has writing on the left hand side and wonderful colourful pictures on the right hand side. This format is great for young children, as it enables them to follow the story through the pictures and therefore ensures that they are constantly engaged in the book.
This lovely little story begins by introducing us to Mr Nonsense. Mr Nonsense doesn't have a scrap of sense he sleeps in a rowing boat in his house up a tree in a place called Nonsenseland. Mr Silly also lives in Nonsenseland and the pair are very good friends.
The book then goes on to tell the reader about the activities the pair do together and then moves in to what happens when it snows in Nonsenseland and what Mr Nonsense and Mr Silly do then.
This book is a really lovely read for children and is quite humorous at times. It doesn't however seem to have a strong plot, yes I know it's a children's book but some of the others do. Saying this however it is still a pleasure to read and because it is one book from a large series this also encourages children to continue on their reading journey and so broaden their reading ability hopefully to the point were they can read the stories to you rather than the other way round.
The story itself is relatively short and can easily be read when you have five or ten minutes spare. It also makes a lovely bedtime read.
This book has an RRP of £2.50, which I think is very reasonable for such a great story. However it can be purchased for less if you shop around a little bit, your local supermarket being a great place to start or if all else fails try Ebay.
Summary: Another classic Mr Men story
