Advantages: A great Christmas read

Disadvantages: NONE

Mr Men 'The Night Before Christmas' is one of 18 stories in the Mr Men and Little Miss books with added Sparkle collection. The reason these books are called with added sparkle is the fact that all of the front covers have something glittery or sparkly or shimmery about them. I must add at this point however that despite being a huge Mr Men and Little Miss fan I wasn't immediately aware of the existence of these books and to be truly honest have only recently begun to purchase them.

The front cover of this lovely little book has a wonderful nighttime picture of Santa crossing the sky in his sleigh pulled by reindeer. Also sat in his sleigh is the lovely Mr Christmas. The sparkly part of this front cover is the many, many stars that are dotted all over, as they are made from a metallic substance and so shimmer and shine as do the words Mr Men in the title. The back of the book contains small pictures of all the other titles in this 'with added sparkle!' series.

It was the night before Christmas and everyone was prepared for Christmas Day. Except Mr Wrong who thought he was going on holiday. All the Mr Men had decorated their trees except Mr Muddle who had decorated himself and they had all sent their letters to Father Christmas in good time, except Little Miss Late who had only sent hers that morning. Would it get there on time?

The book progresses showing what else all the Mr Men and Little Miss have done to prepare for Christmas and then moves onto the North Pole where little miss Christmas is just about to wave off Mr Christmas and Father Christmas. But would they stop at Little Miss Late's house.

Well would they? .... I'm not going to tell you that you'll have to read it to find out.

This book is a wonderful read for Christmas time, as like the Mr Men Christmas Carol it puts a spin on a classic Christmas tale by introducing the well loved characters of the Mr Men and Little Miss.

The format of the book is the same as it always has been throughout all of the Mr Men and Little Miss collections of books. Writing is printed on the left hand side of the book and wonderfully bright and vibrant pictures are printed on the right hand side in order to constantly engage the reader. In my opinion the drawings in this book as well as all of the other stories written by the series creator's son, Adam Hargreaves are much better than in the originals. In these stories and in this one particularly light and warmth are captured fantastically to say that the drawings are merely cartoons. For me this is merely something else to prove how wonderful this and all the other Mr Men tales truly are.

Currently (December 2008) this book can easily be picked up in most supermarkets and bookshops. The supermarket price is usually around the £2 mark whereas bookshops tend to stick to the books £2.99 RRP. Whatever the price you pay though the book is more than worth it.

Summary: A lovely story to read to children at Christmas time
