Advantages: A fun little read
Disadvantages: None spring to mind
As a young child the Mr Men and Little Miss series of books were always a firm favourite of mine. They were so popular in my house that I had the teddies, the bedding, the curtains, posters, and mugs. I could go on but I'll stop. The point I am trying to make is that once you start reading these books your love for them just doesn't end and I think that it is this that has made the series so popular.
Mr Rush is number 30 in the Mr Men series, which contains 46 books written by Roger Hargreaves and later his son Adam. Mr Rush is himself triangular in shape and has small arms and small legs. He also always has a broad grin and wears a small yellow hat. It is this picture of him that you see on the front cover of the book above, which is his name in block, black capitals.
The back of the book then contains smaller pictures of all the other Mr Men characters alongside their names and numbers. This is a good feature in my opinion because it makes the task of knowing which book to purchase and read next that much easier. The price of the book is also located on the back. My copy has the price tag £1.25 but I believe the book currently retail for £2.50 although they can be purchased for less if you shop around.
This is the story of Mr Rush who was the fastest thing on two legs. Now because Mr Rush rushed everyone he never did anything properly. One morning after waking up he hurried down the stairs, boiled his egg for five seconds, toasted his bread for two seconds and then ate half of his breakfast, it tasted awful. After breakfast he rushed out of the house and went nowhere very fast.
Later that day whilst reading a magazine he noticed an advertisement for a holiday and wished he could go on one. Unfortunately he didn't have any money and so decided to get a job but what sort of a job can a person that rushes everywhere really do?
Like all the other stories in the series this book is written in a way that makes it easy for young children to understand. The writing is simple yet not too simplistic as to patronise more competent readers. The writing on the left hand side of the book is also always accompanied by brightly coloured illustrations on the right that make the story such a joy to read. The text itself isn't overly long and so is guaranteed to hold attention and better still it can be read in roughly five minutes making the story perfect for bedtime reading.
My love for all things Mr Men and Little Miss always meant that this book would rate highly with me but I think that it is also a story that is loved by many other people and so this book scores the full 5/5 stars with no hesitation.
PS: You ma be pleased to know that I have nor eviewed the entire Mr Men and Little Miss original collection. No more Mr Men/ Little Miss reviews for a while.
Summary: A superb read
