Advantages: Easy to read book
Disadvantages: None
Mrs Lathers Laundry is a book which belongs to the Happy Families Collection. The cover of the book is purple and shows a picture of Mrs Lather washing babies in a big metal tub and the title above the picture in bright purple letters. Above the title is the Happy Families logo in dark purple rectangles. The back cover of the book is also purple and has a white rectangle which has small pictures inside showing other titles available in the collection.
The story starts on a Monday which is a bad day in Mrs Lathers Laundry, she was having trouble with the ironing. Miss and Master Lather were having a tug of war with the washing and Mrs Lather was going crazy with the washing and saying she is sick of socks and if she has to wash another one she will go crazy. She then decided to put a sign in her window saying she would wash anything except socks.
On Tuesday Mrs Lather again had a bad day. Miss and Master Lather were playing tennis and hide and seek with the washing and she was going crazy washing all the vests. Mr Lather then decided to put another sign in the shop window which this time read, we wash anything except laundry.
What would happen to the Laundry shop if they no longer washed clothes, would they have to close or would they be inundated with other different and weird things to wash????
This is a lovely short book in the Happy Families collection. The book has been written in nice basic and simple words and most of the words are repeated through out the book so it is ideal for new beginners to read on their own. This book is easily read independently by my 6 year old and only takes him about 10 minutes to read it all and to look at all the pictures as well. The writing is always on plain white sections of the pages and is a nice good size and is always in black ink which makes it nice and clear to read.
The illustrations are All nice and bright and colourful. They are great for helping to tell the story and they also help to keep my 4 year old interested in the book for a short time before he looses interest.
Other books in this collection include:-
Master Money the Millionaires Son
Mr and Mrs Hay the Horse
Mr Biff the Boxer
Mrs Wobble the Waitress
Mr Tick the Teacher.
The retail price on the back of this book is £2.99 but these can be picked up a lot cheaper on EBay and Amazon with prices starting from just 1p. I only paid just over a pound for my copy which is a great price for such a good reading book.
The book was written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by Andre Amstutz. It was published by Puffin.
I recommend this and the other books in the Happy Families collection for all new readers.
Summary: A book especially desinged for the beginner reader
