Advantages: nice message
Disadvantages: none
This lovely children's book tells the story of a little chick and its mother. The chick keeps getting into trouble, potentially annoying its mum. Every time it asks the mum if she loves it, and the mum says yes. At one point the mum shouts at the baby and their relationship is really put to the test.
The nicest thing about this book are the illustrations which are watercolours. There's something really nice and old-school about them, and you can't help but like them. The colours are earthy and pastel like, and it doesn't jump off and hit you, but it is nice and calm.
The language is simple and repetitive, making it good for helping children to learn their English. As a parent, it can get a tad dull to read the same words over and over, but then that's all part of being a dad is it not?
The message in the story is also very nice - it's all about unconditional love, keeping patient etc etc. I can't help but think the message is more for the parent than the child, but then you can always refer to this book if you're telling them off, e.g. "I love you, but you must stop being silly, just like the chick in the book".
All in all, a nice simple book with a nice message attached.
