“Read this!”, my dad chimed as he thrust the book into my hands. I looked at the cover - dull colours, oil painting, old man - GOSH the enthusiasm flowed. But as they always say : don’t judge a book by its cover. Once I got into it, this book enveloped me with its descriptions of life in the 17th Century Danish court. Not a subject I would immediately look for for absorbing reads. The story revolves around English lutenist, Peter Claire, and his relationship with Danish King, Christian. The characters are warm and humorous, and the plot complex, with several characters telling their side of the story, at the same time. My personal favourite character ...
