Advantages: Scintillating unputdownable-ness

Disadvantages: None that I can think of

“Read this!”, my dad chimed as he thrust the book into my hands. I looked at the cover - dull colours, oil painting, old man - GOSH the enthusiasm flowed. But as they always say : don’t judge a book by its cover. Once I got into it, this book enveloped me with its descriptions of life in the 17th Century Danish court. Not a subject I would immediately look for for absorbing reads. The story revolves around English lutenist, Peter Claire, and his relationship with Danish King, Christian. The characters are warm and humorous, and the plot complex, with several characters telling their side of the story, at the same time. My personal favourite character was Kirsten, the king’s wife, an adulterous sex mad red-head whose lover Otto enjoys spanking her with a silken
whip. Oooo how rude!!

The lutenist plays with the Danish royal orchestra in a cold dark cellar, so that visitors to the court can marvel at the sound, which apparently comes from invisible musicians. The cellar is described to great effect - I started to shiver and could almost hear the chickens clucking in their cage.

The book is both entertaining and harrowing, for example, in the King’s desperate efforts to procure funds for his near bankrupt struggling country. One of these is a silver mine which delivers hope to the people of the area until it collapses, killing all their menfolk, and the brilliant engineers brought in to construct it. New engineers are
to be brought in from Russia, but the lone survivor of their journey across the Arctic wastes has suffered such that he can barely live, let alone work.

For me this book has everything. I’m trying to balance this opinion, but I honestly can’t think of anything wrong with it. So read it - goddam you!!
