Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne
by bluejules - written on 27/08/07 (Very useful, 210 readings)
Rating:
This is one of the best books that I have read in quite a while. I first seen it in Asda but as it was still in hardback and the sleeve didn't give much away I didn't buy it. Then just a few days later it appeared in my mam's copy of The Book People magazine. As it was cheaper than Asda (by a couple of pound) and the magazine hinted slightly towards what the story was about I decided to give it a go and so I bought it. And I'm so glad I did… "The story of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is very difficult to describe. Usually we give some clues about the book on the jacket but in this case we think that would spoil the book. We think it is important that you start to read ...

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne

Rating:
in a subtle way was which raised it above the level of children’s story and provided something for adults to get their teeth into. The inaccuracies aside, John Boyne has certainly created a book that bounds along at a good pace and is well-crafted enough to provide some surprises. I thought I knew what was coming but I was very wrong: I cannot think of any other book I have had in recent years that has shocked and moved me so dramatically. If my three star rating seems harsh, it should no be regarded as such. "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" is a good book and the writing is excellent. However, I just couldn t work out who exactly it is aimed at. Anyone who ...

The Thief of Time - John Boyne
by Katz1 - written on 27/08/01 (Very useful, 117 readings)
Rating:
are being told a few different stories at once, and is something that does work as a device for capturing and holding the readers’ attention. This is John Boyne’s first novel and as such it is quite impressive. He has chosen an interesting subject matter and has tackled it in an original fashion. The disappointing aspects, such as the characterisation of Matthieu, the at-times unrealistic dialogue, and the insufficient detail on the female characters in the book, do however, detract from its potential. If you are intrigued by the premise of a character who is either incapable of dying or growing old, I would recommend a book called ...
