Advantages: Just a good read all around, superb character development
Disadvantages: Looks a bit girly when reading in public, that's all I can find as a negative
If you've read my review of Marley And Me you'll know my book list is very male dominated. I don't tend to like chick-lit at all. Because of this the prospect of reading a book with such a title, such a cover, such a synopsis ugggh why did I agree to read it?
The synopsis even gives away the plot. Former best friends, one dies and the other agrees to look after the daughter of the departed mother. How soppy, how lame and if I skip a few chapters at a time will anyone notice?
That's where the negative slant ends. This is a wonderfully written story, superb characters, gentle and clever subplots, humours at times but a real tear jerker throughout. Even the hardest faced person will feel their heartstrings getting pulled all over the shop.
Koomson's detail of developing her characters is so strong you begin to feel as if you not only know the characters but you're actually involved in the book. Be it as a Luke, a Nate, a Kam or even a little Tegan. It's impossible to not get involved.
Genuinely a good book. Maybe I should read more chick-lit...
Summary: Give it a go!
