Advantages: a nice, real version of pregnancy
Disadvantages: None
My bump and me by Myleen Klass.
So I got a bit carried away at the book store last week and bought quite a few baby books. I bought a few of the scientific ones, ones that tell you what is happening each week etc but I also wanted a bit of a lighthearted one that told you real life facts and so this is where the Myleen Klass book reeled me in.
Myleen Klass is a British television personality, model and classically trained musician. She first came into view as a member of the pop group Hear Say and has gone on to host The One Show, amongst others and model for Marks and Spencer. In 2007 Myleen had a baby with her boyfriend Gray, a little girl whom they called Ava.
This book is basically her pregnancy diary. On the back it is described as, "a poignantly frank, funny and personal insight into Myleen's pregnancy, from conception to birth, including practical advice, essential medical information and an honest account of what's in store for anyone expecting a baby. Myleen's week-by-week pregnancy diary is refreshingly down to earth.
You really don't have to be a fan of hers to enjoy this book. I can't say I particularly love her but then I don't dislike her, I just though this book would be quite different to the generic stuff out there and it really was.
At times she is very personal and lets on about a lot of her feeling which if I was her boyfriend I perhaps wouldn't like that much as it seems she turned into a bit of a monster and fought with him a lot, gosh I hope that doesn't happen to me. It's goo though because this book also shows me how I don't want to be so in a way it was a help.
The book is written week by week and features such chapter titles as The week I panicked at the airport, The week my doctor told me to stop eating so many doughnuts and The week my friends showered me with love and pink things. What I like is that in each chapter she includes a little section entitled, "My tip" where she gives you some practical advice in relation to what has just happened that week.
Another great part about the book is that Gray wrote a diary too and little extracts of what he thought are added throughout the book. It's really nice to hear the dads side of things for once and how he felt and it really prompts you to think about your partner and his feelings.
There are also sections giving you some more traditional information about your baby by certain weeks telling you it's size and what you should and should not do medically. What I really like about this book is that it gives you such a different view to pregnancy than the books which just tell you what to expect, this is real and funny and brutally honest.
It's very funny in some parts too. I think she was also trying to maybe make the public understand what she went through as she is still a public figure. She didn't let on for quite a while and I think a lot of people though she was acting rather weird when she first found out.
The books has a few pages with some photos of Myleen during the various stages. The book is published by Virgin Books and costs £7.99 and is something I would recommend for a lighthearted, fun read.
