Advantages: Wonderful Book for Children to Learn The Alphabet

Disadvantages: The book is a bit big

This is my review of a childrens book by the same people that wrote My First 123 - This one is called My First ABC (catchy isnt it!)

The boring stuff comes first!

Art Director - Ivan Bulloch
Editor - Diane James
Photographer - Daniel Pangbourne
Production - Adam Wilde
Publisher - Two-Can Publishing (hardback again)
Price - £7.99
ISBN = 1-85434-806-X

The book is the same size as the other one (slightly bigger than A4) and again, its brightly coloured on the cover with loads of lovely pictures on the inside, to attract attention and keep the concentration. As with the first book (123), the ABC book starts off with a rhyme but there is no rhyme on each page, just the beginning of the book.

But it doesnt need to have the rhyme on each page. Each page is dedicated to one letter of the alphabet (except X, Y and Z, which all share the second to last page).

An example is the page for 'A' which says "a is for ..." and there are various pictures like an ambulance, angel, apply, anchor, etc. This is the same throughout the book with a picture and word showing that the item begins with that particular letter.

The actual page has a border of about 1 inch all the way round which has coloured dots and in each dot is a letter of the alphabet. They go clockwise round the page in the correct order so the child can learn the alphabet properly.

The final page in the book shows a variety of different pictures and encourages the child to identify the picture and show on the border which letter of the alphabet that word begins with.

The book is designed to develop early reading skills and to help children recognise and name objects that we see regularly. It really is a great book!

This book is designed for pre-school children but i could suggest that it would be suitable for those just learning to read in primary school because of the help it could give for word association and helping with writing as well. But my experience is for pre-schoolers so i'll stick with that! My girls are aged almost 4 and almost 2 so these are the ages that i can confidently write about (when shes a bit older i may write more on this one!).

When i bought My first 123, I also bought this one for my oldest daughter and this really was a fantastic buy! Its another one of those books that she just cant put down and i really have had my money's worth from this! And now my youngest has started to talk (babble mostly but the odd word does come out!) its proving its worth yet again!

Its a fantastic way of interacting with my kids individually and together as we all have fun identifying the letters and my daughter just loves to tell us what the pictures are, even if her pronounciation isnt the best - its certainly getting better with us using this book.

I wouldnt say she knows all the alphabet but she is definitely learning the difference between letters and can identify a lot more than she could 6 months ago!

The size is an issue for carrying it around buy that is only a small flaw in the design - after all it was designed to catch the eye and it certainly does that! The price is pretty average i think but like i said i've most certainly had my moneys worth and as its being passed on to my younger child its definitely been money well spent.

But in all seriousness, like the other book on numbers, i definitely have no hesitation in recommending this to other parents of young children as my daughters and i have spent many happy hours with this book and hopefully we will spend many more reading together and learning in a fun way.

Enjooy!!!!!

Summary: A bit bulky but a good book anyway

It's a little confusing having so many references to 'the other book' - you can't assume people have read the other opinion!
