This may sound strange but when I was pregnant I read a book about chimpanzees which made me decide to teach my child sign language. The book compared the development of sign language in deaf children and chimpanzees and mentioned that children could sign from only a few months old. It helped me realise that sign language shouldn't be seen as something just for deaf people. Apparently children can learn signs before they have the physical ability to vocalise words, so signing for babies can help them to communicate earlier in life.
