Advantages: Brilliant drawings
Disadvantages: None in my opinion
"My Granny's Great Escape" by Jeremy Strong is another fantastic story that tells of the antics of Nicholas and his family, which include his extremely childish and wacky dad, his mum and his somewhat deaf grandmother.
As in previous stories involving Nicholas this book also features his next-door neighbours, Mr and Mrs Tugg, but more importantly for this story is the introduction of Mr Tugg's father Lancelot who is a member of Hell's Angels.
This story sees Nicholas's Granny fall head over heels in love with the biker from next door. Unfortunately for them however neither Nicholas's dad nor Mr Tugg agree with their relationship and forbid them from seeing each other again. Now both Granny and Lancelot may be old but they certainly aren't going to stand for that and between them do everything they can to ensure that their marriage goes ahead.
Now as you can imagine this story is immensely humorous, especially for a young child as Strong tells the tale in the most brilliant of ways. The story flows magnificently and the laughs are plentiful. Better still for a child's book the characters have been developed extremely well. They all have their own unique and quirk personalities that make the book such a pleasure to read.
The story itself isn't exceptionally long but is broken down into more than manageable chunks to ensure that it is as easy for a child to read on their own as it possibly can be. The size of the chapters are also perfect for bedtime reading meaning that both you and your child can enjoy sharing a more fulfilling novel when it's time to be tucked-in for the night.
This brilliantly quirky book is also interspersed with equally quirky cartoon drawings and annotations, which really help to bring the story being told alive and inspire a child's imagination much more than words alone would. The pictures also encourage a little discussion between parent and child whilst the book is being read.
This book can easily be purchased for all good book shops as well as online and if you enjoy this one then the others books in the series may also be ones worth reading. These include "My Dad's got an Alligator" and "My Mum's Going to Explode", which are both centred around Nicholas and his family.
In my opinion this book is probably most suited to children aged between 6 - 12 if being read to or 8 - 12 if reading alone. So if you have a child of this age that enjoys reading or you simply enjoy reading to them then maybe this is the book for them.
Summary: A fantastic and humorous story for children
