Advantages: Bright photos.

Disadvantages: No flaps to lift.

This is one of four 'Shaped Bag Books' by Dorling Kindersley first published a decade ago:

* My School Bag
* My Lunch Box
* My Doctor's Bag
* My Toolbox

- Style and Format -

As the title suggests this book is in the shape of a bag, with a little handle section at the top so that it can actually be carried around like a bag. The hardcover as opposed to the board book which has a cut out handle is shown by dooyoo,

It is a board book and therefore ideal for small hands as the pages are thick card and won't rip.

It's a short book, made up of only 4 double pages. Each page has photographs of objects with the name of the object printed in large, simple font.

It shows: coloured pencils, notebook, crayons, scissors, ruler, paints, glue, stapler marbles and much more. In total there are 19 photos in the book all of which can be found in nurseries and schools.

- General -

This is a very good book for pre-nursery and pre-school children, age 2 upwards. It encourages and develops recognition and naming of a range of objects and can help prepare an apprehensive child for what they may like to have in their school bag (although I wouldn't encourage all of these things to carry in each day) or what they will no doubt see at school.

A bright, short book, just the right length to hold a young child's attention although it would probably have benefited from some flaps to lift like many other Dorling Kindersley books aimed at this age range so as to develop fine motor skills.

- Price -

ISBN: 0-7513-5944-0
When I bought this many moons ago it was priced at £3.99.
The hardcover version which doesn't have the cut out handle section is currently for sale at amazon for just 1p.

- Dorling Kindersley -

The company was founded in 1974 by Peter Kindersley and Christopher Dorling. When the latter retired in 1987 The Reader's Digest purchased 50% of the shares and it was in this year that they launched the first children's list.
DK publishes an extensive range of titles for adults and children and is the UKs market leader in illustrated non-fiction books.

- Other DK Books -

There are far, far too many to list below but the ones I have chosen link in with the same kind of age group as the one I have reviewed. As I said earlier it's well worth taking a look at their website for a more comprehensive list.

My First Counting Touch and Feel
My First Time Board Book
My First Number Board Book
Lift The Flap Numbers
Touch and Feel 123
Opposites
