Advantages: Alive with plot twists and excellently written characters

Disadvantages: Disturbing

This book is different than the other Virginia Andrews books, but equally sinister and gripping. We are taken into the confusing world of Audrina, a little girl bewildered by time and living an old fashioned and secluded existence with her family and her cousin who hates her and is jealous of her. She had an older sister who died mysteriously, and sometimes her father makes Audrina go to her room and sit in her rocking chair, and see terrifying things. But there are terrible secrets hiding in their family that everyone seems to know but her, and terrible lies built on trust and love, that when uncovered, will never threaten to destroy what remains of Audrina's sanity and her life

This is Virginia Andrews at her best, and I have read this book many times over. It is well written, very creepy, and about as disturbing as it gets. You are so compelled by the story line that when Audrina discovers her truth, you are blind-sighted, and amazed you didn't figure it out sooner. It is impossible to put down, I read it in one sitting, over the course of an evening the first time; you are somehow torn between wanting Audrina to discover the secrets and knowing it will be terrible for her.

This book is an excellent psychological thriller, and even if you don't like Virginia Andrews, or have never read her books, this is the one to read. It leaves you feeling sad, angry and questioning the subjectivity of memory.

Summary: A very good standalone book, that leaves you wanting more.
