Advantages: Good story, well thought out

Disadvantages: A little too many far fetched twists

This is the first Agatha Christie book published and is the first to introduce us to Hecule Poirot and Captain Hastings. It details how they met and how the “little Belgian” came to be in England.

The actual case centres around the death of Mrs Inglethorp, a wealthy woman who had recently remarried, much to the disgust of her step family. Her new husband is unliked by anyone and when Mrs Inglethop ends up dead he is top on the list of suspects. The evidence mounts up against him but as usual there are twists and turns aplenty.

I wouldn’t put this book into my top ten favourites but it is definitely worth a read. The plot is interesting and convoluted, and Poirot does himself proud. This is a firm beginning for Agatha Christie’s literary career and is a must for any fan.
