Norman Mailer served in the US army during WWII, fighting mostly in the Phillipines. Norman's first novel, The Naked and the Dead, was written within four years of his release from service at the end of the war. Then a young man he set about recounting the true realities of war as he experienced it. The distance from home, loneliness, terror, boredom, paranoia, ineptitude, aptitude, bravery, cowardice. For it's time I can see why it was so groundbreaking. Those of you looking for an action packed battle after battle, fast paced, gung ho, John Wayne kind of experience, DON'T read this book!
