Advantages: Iintrigueing plot, likeable characters
Disadvantages: A bit generic, has been done before, has been turned into a fad more than an art
I am not entirely sure why but this title seems to have made a huge impact on the western world in recent years.
Every anime fan whom has emerged in the last three years or so has highly rated this manga but more specifically the anime series despite the fact to an anime veteran like myself it just seems like a typical shonnen jump anime (typical long running manga producer who makes long running boys manga such as dragon ball and yu gi oh).
The story starts off with a huge fox demon threatening the lives of the leaf village, in an attempt to solve the problem the village leader seals the soul of the demon inside a baby boy who turns out to be the protagonist of the story.
This boy is Naruto Uzumaki, he is determined to become a great ninja and protect his village to prove himself, however because of his past he has become socially isolated,in the beginning the only friend he has is his teacher, who was an orphan of the fox demon disaster and so can sort of understand Narutos isolation and loneliness as he too was by himself so long.
Naruto is a bit of a rebel and only under real life threatening conditions can he actually reach his full potential as a ninja, such an instance in the first issue is when his teacher is about to get murdered, Naruto totally comes out of himself and is capable of using special powers it takes many skilled ninjas years to master.
I suppose the plot is sort of original and interesting but manga about ninja have been done before and the endless fighting sagas in this series over all remind me of dragon ball or dragon ball z.
The art work is a little generic but the character development does seem to make up for it, throughout the entire manga the story follows naruto and his fellow ninja friends as they grow up and learn more about themselves and each other (this also reminded me a bit of the way dragon ball z flowed though)
This manga has come into a great deal of popularity and the characters are automatically recognizable all over the world.
A lot of people have based their opinions of this title based on the anime viewed on Jetix tv on cable but i do not think this is a fair representation of the manga therefore i would give the manga 4/5 and the anime 3/5 for censorship and misinterpretation.
Each volume of the manga costs around 7 sterling pounds each and the anime comes in box sets of around 13 episodes which vary in price according to how recent the release, maybe 15-30 sterling.
Summary: Is ok if you like Shonnen Jump, but could be more stimulating
