Britain has a huge variety of landscapes packed into quite a small space; for its size, it has one of the most varied environments in the world. It's this variety, in such a small area, that makes our islands so special. In one day, it's possible to travel from the tundra-like conditions at the tops of our highest mountains, to parts of the thousands of miles of coastline, to the lush valleys and chalk streams of the south. Because of the many different habitats it holds, Britain is incredibly rich in natural history.
