Advantages: I like the genre
Disadvantages: Very badly written
I read Neuromancer about 5 years ago and while I understand that it is credited with the birth of the cyberpunk genre (which I doubt since Dick’s Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep was earlier) I can’t help but feel that this is a reasonable story poorly written. As far as I can remember this is Gibson’s first book and it will almost certainly be the last of his that I read. My enduring memories of it are that I had to keep rereading bits because I didn’t understand them. Obviously this was not because I am some unintelligent gimbo, rather it is because it is poorly written. Some good ideas in here just wanting to get out despite the poor writing. I have over the years found it difficult to believe the amount of kudos given to this book. Just my opinion, but this guy is nothing in comparison to the scifi masters. BTW that film Johnny Mnemonic was a bit poo too.

- 05/10/01 Everyone to their own I guess, but I enjoyed the book. Yes it takes a while to read/re-read but like Pulp Fiction is gets better the more you begin to understand it. Theeagles comment on emotional response, is perhaps what Gibson intended after all in a Cyberworld how much emotion can there be? |

- 29/04/01 Dmullier`s views on Neuromancer are similar to my own, if a bit harsh. It`s a difficult read because the characters are badly drawn and unsympathetic, a case of too much plot and not enough emotional response. It`s a fair comment. |
