Advantages: Fast paced engaging reading!
Disadvantages: References to cold war
Night Probe is a novel by Clive Cussler from the NUMA files. It was published in 1988 and is the sixth novel Cussler has written featuring Dirk Pitt.
The story begins in 1914, two diplomats hurry home each carrying top secret documentation, however a collision with another ship and a train crash mean that neither return home and their documents are lost.
The story then moves to the present day - 1989. The attempted assasination of the Canadian prime minister and the chance discovery of a reference to the 'North American treaty' by a US Navy Commander, although they seem to have nothing in common turn out to be very much connected.
Dirk Pitt is called in, in a race against time as three nations fight to uncover the documents that disappeared with the death of the diplomats nearly 80 years ago. Each nation is desperate as this top secret treaty will threaten to change the nations as we currently know them.
As with all of Clive Cusslers novels, this was well written and engaging, a fast paced novel which captures the readers imagination.
I did have a small problem with the story, because of the time at which it was written a lot of international politics were affected by the cold war between Russia and the US, I don't remember the cold war so I did feel a little lost of in a couple of places, but I always find that in books written during cold war. At the time it was written the book will have fit the context of the time for the people who read it then and you can never anticipate what will happen as time passes, so it's not really a critisism of the book, I just wanted to point it out.
Just as exciting a novel as some of his most recent! It's impressive that such a prolific writer can be just as exciting and engaging when he's been writing for over 20 years.
