Because if I didn't know better, I'd have put the date for the translation of this book as somewhere around the mid-1980s - although of course at that stage the book hadn't even been written as yet. The dialogue in places it comes across as dated as that and I find it painful to read - particularly as the narrative is written in the first person, from the viewpoint of one of the...more

Uh-huh. I read on the cover of one of his books that Sergei Lukyanenko, the author of the very succesful 'Night Watch' fantasy / horror series, is effectively 'Russia's JK Rowling' - a comment which, before starting reading the first one of his books, I was completely at a loss to understand. It should be borne in mind that at that stage I'd only seen the (2003?) film version which I'd thought was really rather good. Would that I had left things that way with the status quo undisturbed, etc., because beginning reading this fantasy series was for me, something of a mistake. The Night Watch is a science fiction novel written by Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko, and is the first book in the Night Watch trilogy. The book was originally written in Russian (obviously I am reviewing the translated English version), and the series as a whole has enjoyed fantastic success in Russia. It has also been critically acclaimed in other countries, including the UK, with The Daily Telegraph calling it "JK Rowling, Russian style". A bold claim indeed. THE WORLD The Night Watch is set in modern day Russia (Moscow, specifically) and follows The Others, beings who look exactly like humans, but who possess supernatural powers. ...  Read the complete review

The night watch is part of a four book series written by Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko. I hadn't heard of the author before nor had I come across any of his books. I can imagine writing in the fantasy genre in Solviet Russia wasn't easy, it must have been hard to get his name out in his own country, never mind the rest of the world. However towards the end of the millenia he first released his book "The Night watch". It was a hit in Russia and was made into quite a high budget film! The sucess of the film ultimately led to huge popularity in the books. It wasn't long after that the rest of the world was introduced to this series. A movie sequel ...  Read the complete review
