The wonders of the night sky are accessible to anyone with a decent pair of binoculars or a telescope. In our solar system, Jupiter's great red spot and its retinue of circling moons, Mars' polar ice caps and desert regions, and the Moon's mountains and craters can all be seen with one's own eye staring through a telescope. More distant objects including remnants of exploded stars, regions where stars are being born at the same time, and distant galaxies whose light left on the long journey across the intergalactic gulf during the age of the dinosaurs can all be seen if one knows where to look.
