Advantages: Classic book, you have to read it
Disadvantages: None.
I first came across 'Nineteen Eighty Four' by George Orwell when i was recomended it by a friend. A whole year past, untill i finaly decided it was a bout time i read it. I was brimming with excitement all the way home once i'd purchased it, and started reading it straight away....i wasn't disapointed!
'Nineteen Eighty Four' is a fictional story, where George Orwell predicts the future. It is set in a society which is so regulated and controlled by a higher authority, that anything thought to be against the system results in death. Lead character Winston speant his life wondering what has happend in the past, and trying to avoid 'thought crime', but this cautious manner of his is disrupted when he falls for the stunning Julia, and the road of disruption begins.
I highly reccomend this book to EVERYONE! At first it was hard for me to get my head around it as i had heard so much about it previous to actually reading book. I had already made my mind up about characters and possible storylines without having read it. But once i'd got past these assumptions and got to know the characters, i fell in love with the book. It has it's ups and its downs, and moments when you genuinely care for the characters and feel the unjust which they feel.
It is fairly relevent to now, in the 'Big Brother' age of CCTV, and reality TV shows. It makes you think of all kinds of possiblities and what will happen next...
Overall it is a wonderfull book, and i plan to read others by the author. It is the kind of book which needs alot of attention, and is quite confusing...you may need to read it again (i know i will).
Summary: It's quite amazing how George Orwell predicted the future so right

- 13/08/05 I hated this book when I read it, although that's probably 20 years ago now. I found it deeply disturbing and wished I hadn't tried it. There are some quite unpleasant parts to the book, and the conclusion was depressing. So while I'm glad you enjoyed it, and of course everyone's entitled to their perspectives, I didn't feel the review would really help people decide if they'd like the book or not. Sue |
