Advantages: The love story, the terrifying vision of the future
Disadvantages: I can find no faults, a breathless read.
This book is from one of the best visionary writers of the past century. Perhaps spelling out his own fear for the future of Earth, split into three super continents constantly at war, perhaps just a true work of fiction, this man is a literary genius.
Following Winston throughout the majority of the text, you soon begin to see the man we are following, soon followed by a possible "thought-police accomplice" Julia. What interests me most in the book is not all the visionary terror, beautifully crafted and interesting as it is, but perhaps the fight for love the characters undergo. Finding secret hiding places and commiting thoughtcrime together. The love story that lines the book is a terrific streak of beguiling beauty across a dark forshadowing text, it makes the book become human, become real.
George Orwell is a fantastic writer, one whose fantastical vision springs into your mind instantly. I will certainly be reading many of his other novels.
Summary: George Orwell's renowned masterpiece is truly and unsuspectingly beautiful.

- 05/11/09 That's ok! I didn't know how spoilery to be so I thought best to keep it vague and talk about the themes i enjoyed. |

- 05/11/09 Sorry for the SU, but there's a frustrating lack of detail here. The last para looks almost as though it's been put in just to make the word limit - I'm not saying that's the case, just that it seems that way. I don't think a newcomer to the book would get more than a vague idea of the story. |
