He became a full time writer in 1988, Cowboys and Indians was his first novel for which he won the Sunday Tribune New Irish writer of the year award. I recently reviewed another book by Joseph O Connor called Star of the Sea and you could not find two different pieces of work indeed I never realised it was the same author showing him to be a versatile and creative writer with a great range of styles. asked for a book to read as usually when sleeping in a strange house I wake up early and cannot get back off to sleep and so this book by Joseph O’Connor was thrust into my hand. In the end after consuming a large amount of alcohol a WW2 air-raid siren would not have woken me but when I got home I found the book in my bag and decided to give it a try. I did not realize at the time but this was in fact the second Joseph O’Connor book that I have read, the first being the very entertaining Cowboys and Indians which was short listed for the Whitbread prize.
