No Good Deed - Manda Scott

Description: ISBN 0755329031 / Genre: Crime / Thriller / Author: Manda Scott / o Good Deed begins with what most thrillers would have as their climax--undercover cop Orla McLeod talks a young boy into cutting her free to fight back as drugs race catastrophically through her system and a ... more
No Good Deed - Manda Scott ... colleague is tortured to death in another room. Orla is a woman who keeps her promises, and she promised the child that she would look after him, forever--and this she does, though Hell stands in her way. In this radical break with the intense, but comparably gentle, detective stories with which she started her career, Manda Scott gives us a full range of thriller experiences--brutal noir as the police try to persuade Glasgow's criminals to give up a torturer gang boss of whom everybody is afraid, Buchanesque wanderings through the snow-covered foothills of a remote mountain district and a sense of growing dread as we struggle to understand what made Tord Svensen the vicious killer he is, what Orla will have to learn to defeat him. No Good Deed is a meditation on vengeance and violence and their costs, and what it means to walk away and make other choices; it is one of the most remarkable thrillers of the year.

With the release of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2007, this novel was extremely well marketed to tell a different story of a skull made of blue quartz, though both concepts are not linked. Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle - Manda Scott

Premium Review Ancient history as it might have been (570 words)
by ladybracknell - written on 25/05/09 (Very useful, 19 readings)
Rating:

I first came across Manda Scott when I read one of her crime novels, Stronger Than Death, which I thoroughly enjoyed, so I looked for other books she had written and found Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle, the first in her series about the life and times of Boudica or Boadicea as she was know when I was at school. Firstly, this book is very hard to categorise and doesn t fit entirely into the genre of Science Fiction/Fantasy but could also be described as a historical novel. Historically, there is no doubt that Boudica existed although details of her life are pretty sketchy and what is know was written by the Romans. Manda Scott has built on limited information about the ...

Might be interesting for those who have an analytical mind - and understand forensive anthropology! Slow, no excitement, too complex to be entertaining for the average reader

Thrilling and just keeps you guessing Difficult to get in to at first

A taut plot, a page-turner. A ittle slow to start

Some who enjoy this genre are likely to enjoy this book It doesn't quite seem able to 'fit' a genre at times. Could be stronger.
