Advantages: good read

Disadvantages: not Ian Fleming's Bond.

This is the first Bond book that I've read. This book is by John Gardner and not Ian Fleming, It is not a book of the films either. Since I've seen all the films so many times I was hoping for a new adventure. But could it be Bond as we know him.

In this book Bond is on a mission of his own, A mission that takes him across Europe. His mission, To fetch home his house keeper from the Klinik Mozart in the mountains south of Salzburg after recovering from her second attack of Bronchitis.

While driving to the clinic a number of deaths occur, Two people disappear overboard on the ferry to Europe, A white BMW that sped up behind Bond's Bentley suddenly explodes after being passed by another speeding car and on an overnight stop in Strasbourg a professional killer known to Bond as the poison Dwarf is found dead yards from his hotel. Bond also rescues Sukie Tempesta from two thugs at a garage. But is she all she seems?

Soon Bond learns from M, His boss at Her Majesty's Secret Service that his house keeper and a visiting Miss Moneypenny have been kidnapped and what is really going on. Someone has put a price on his head, Literary. There is a game being played that any criminal organisation can join in. The prize is Ten Million , The winner must bring the head of Bond on a Silver Charger to Tamil Rahani an old enemy of bond and the Chief executive of SPECTRE, now dying because of Bond.

Bond now finds himself up against Spectre, Smersh, the KGB, F.A.L.N, the British, French and German underground, and at least three Mafia families. And with such a high reward, he is not sure whether he can trust the police, his own people and friends or even his new passenger Sukie.

This is a typical Bond adventure with guns, girls and lots of action. There is a strong plot easy to follow and a twist at the end, It was a different end to the one I thought it was heading for, So it confused me. I feel this Bond was written as a T
Dolten type , A more violent and less caring Bond. Its also the one I liked the least. Don't get me wrong though, the book is well written and a good story, its just a matter of taste. On a scale of 001 to 007, I'd give this a 006. It's only 245 page's so a quick and easy read. The only thing missing is the opening Bond theme music and dancing girls.
