I'm not quite sure how to start - but let me get one thing of my chest. I feel genuinely horrified that anyone could compare this book to "Harry Potter". While the latter is nice, innocent, family fun, and perfectly good in it's way, it doesn't even approach being in the same league as "Northern Lights". "Northern Lights" is... intelligent, witty, exiting, daring, elctrifyingly emotional, thoughtful. It's powerfully origional. It's one of the few books that you can read, and know that the author is going somewhere completely unexplored.

Like I said, I don't I could sum "Northern lights" up. To say it's the most wonderful book I have ever read is true, but cheesy. I love everything about it: the main character Lyra, who is the strongest, most interesting person I've read in literature for a long time, her daemon/familiar Pantalaimon. the races of people that Philip Pullman has invented. Instead of the tired elves and dwarves, there are great armoured bears and witches. Instead of fairy-tale magic, we have Dust, which is mystical but based in science.

There are so many clever, enchanting ideas, all perfectly crafted into the story that if I tried to even begin explaining it, I'd use three times the word limit, so I'll finish here.

Buy it, borrow it, get it from the library - STEAL IT! (only joking) - I don't care, just get hold of it somehow, and read it if you know what's good for you!
