A superb book, accessible to anyone with a heart and full of everything Amis did best and very little of what he did worst. The book is funny, sad and angry. But much, much more than that is the fact that it is humane. Essentially the story of a group of old friends in old age attempting to make the most of their retirement and come to terms - or fail to come to terms - with their past, present and future. Past wrongs (as well as perceived wrongs) are dragged to the surface, ill-temper flares and memories are called to mind.
