Advantages: The book wil lhelp your child learn new vegetables.

Disadvantages: There aren't any.

Oliver's Vegetables by Vivian French and Illustrated by Alison Bartlett. You can buy this book from Amazon for £4.49 (paperback). I would say the book is suitable for children aged 3 years and over.

This is another book that my daughters got in there story sacks at nursery. The nursery tried to get the children more involved with the book by putting knitted vegetables and knitted characters that are in the book in the sack. I think this help my daughters enjoy the book as they got to pretend to act out the book with the characters.

The books front cover has a picture of Oliver on holding some carrots with his Grandpas vegetable patch behind him which is the main focus of the story. The book is about a boy called Oliver who goes to visit his Gran and Grandpa. Oliver loves going to there house as there is a big vegetable patch with vegetables on that his Grandpa has grown. Oliver tells his Grandpa that he doesn't like vegetable he only like chips so his Grandpa tells him he can have chips if he finds the potatoes. But if he comes across anything else when he is looking for them he has to eat that as well. He starts his search for potatoes but the first thing he pulls out of the ground is carrots so for Monday lunch Oliver ate his first carrots. Each day he pulls at a new vegetable hoping it's a potato but ends up pulling something else out so he has that for tea.. Each day Oliver is trying a new vegetable and each one he has he realises that he is actually enjoying them. On Sunday Oliver finds the potatoes his Grandpa wonders how he found them Oliver says they were the only things left. They peel the potatoes and have them for tea at that moment Oliver's mum walks in and says I was hoping he would try something else while he stayed there and they all laughed.

The story is very basic but is a fun story for your child and I think it is just the right length. I think the book would be good to read to a child that is similar to Oliver who doesn't like there vegetables. As you could probably try to convince them to try there vegetable just like Oliver did and he found out he liked them. My daughters are big fans of vegetables so I don't need to persuade them to. But they still enjoyed the book and liked guessing what each vegetable was. Every time Oliver found a new vegetable I talked to my child a bit about the vegetable and I found that they were taking it in. I found the story also helped them with the days of the week as there still learning them and the story tells us about Oliver trying the vegetables on different days. The illustrations are nice and bright and straight to the point when you see them you can tell exactly what is going on. The font is easy to read and the words that are used are easy for my child to understand and enjoy.

Summary: Overall a great book for your child.
