Advantages: gripping writing, good plot, characters wonderful

Disadvantages: none

This is the first of a series of books about Honor Harrington, a member of the Royal Manticoran Navy. She has displeased an important person in the naval ranks, and has been assigned a post and a mission that no-one expects her to be able to fulfil. However, Honor is resourceful, clever and doesn't understand the meaning of the word "can't". She proceeds to accomplish what she set out to do, although with some unexpected results, and at considerable cost to her crew and herself.

Although this series could be classified as "space opera", don't let that put you off. David Weber is a brilliant author, and writes totally believable science fiction. Star Trek could learn a lot from this man. His characters are real, his storyline is gripping and his considerable background in the history of warfare allows him to write about war realistically. He also goes to considerable effort to explain and make real the problems of space flight in a way that Star Trek never did and although that can get a bit technical at times, it is not overwhelming and you don't need to be a physicist to understand it.

I think, with my extensive experience of Sci Fi, that this is one of the best books I ever read, and the subsequent books in the series are even better. The storyline never gets stale, and the plot never loses it's hold.

Do yourself a favour, and get this book.If I could give it 6 stars I would. If you don't love it, and aren't hooked on Honor, please write and tell me why.
