On Green Dolphin Street - Sebastian Faulks ... story of a solitary woman in great turmoil. As the Eisenhower years end and 1960 ushers in John F. Kennedy. Mary van der Linden confronts the terror of the Cold War - a dark background to her carefree existence in Washington.

... and her predicament is made even worse by the rapidly deteriorating health of her mother back in England, and Charlie van der Linden's alcohol driven self-destruction. Who will she choose? In terms of tone, there is a lot of style. Technically speaking the writing is very good. I like descriptive writing, but it becomes pointless if the descriptions don't lead anywhere. Where I feel the book is lacking is in terms of substance. For example, we are told that there is a skeleton in Frank Renzo's closest, but when it c...more

Premium Review On Green Dolphin Street - Sebastian Faulks: Faulk's departure from setting marks departure from quality (527 words)
by - written on 01/12/08 (Very useful, 79 readings)
Rating:

OK, firstly I feel I should point out that this is the only Sebastian Faulks book I have ever read, so I'm not comparing this to the supposedly brilliant Birdsong. So when I say this book is bad, it is not because it isn't as good as Birdsong, it is because it is bad. But first let me give you a brief outline of the plot (no spoilers) before explaining why I don't like this book. The book is set in fifties America, focusing in on a British couple who have emigrated. The husband, Charlie van der Linden is a hard working and even harder partying diplomat. It is at one of Charlie's parties that his wife, Mary draws the eye of an American journalist by the name ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Change of scenery, same quality (650 words)

Rating:

After the brilliancy of 'Birdsong', I eagerly anticipated devouring this latest offering from one of our finest contemporary war novelists and although there seem to be one or two weaknesses this was certainly not a disappointment. Sebastian Faulks now has a slight disadvantage since I don't think he can write another novel that will live up to the quality of 'Birdsong' (hopefully he will prove me wrong) and there are the inevitable comparisons with recent works (admittedly, I didn't enjoy 'Charlotte Grey' anywhere near as much). On 'Green Dolphin Street' is something of a break from tradition since he updates the context to a ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review On Green Dolphin Street - Sebastian Faulks: Freedom or Destiny? (1053 words)
by - written on 31/10/01 (Very useful, 201 readings)
Rating:

Can you picture a scene from one of those 1950s, murder, intrigue and romance genre black and white films. The classy clothes, the elegant postures, the polite language and that atmosphere. In reading Sebastian Faulks' new novel, On Green Dolphin Street, those were the type of images playing in my mind. Faulks is a respected British author; Birdsong (his tale of the first world war) is one of my all time favourite novels. However, I was extremely disappointed with the follow up, Charlotte Gray, which I found forced, poorly plotted and deeply shallow. On Green Dolphin Street on the other hand has received rave reviews and large critical acclaim, so I ...  Read the complete review
