Once in a lifetime is the best book I have ever read about the ill fated MLS, Major League Soccer which was created in America in the 1970's. The league failed for reasons which become very clear in the book, not least that most of its stars were past their best and there as much for the money as anything else. We follow the development of the league with teams like the New York Cosmos signing Pele, while other teams signed George Best, Johann Cruyff, the Cosmos also signed Franz Beckenbauer a few seasons later which gave them an awesome team, but for reasons of personality the teams in the MLS never seemed to gel as they do elsewhere in the ...
