This author is great because he draws you into the book from the very first chapters! He describes places very well using adjectival phrases whenever possible. This book is the first in the series called Goosebumps, the age for it is 8-12, but I think it should be in teenage fiction or young adult, seriously young teenagers will get frightened, I certainly did, and had to finish the book in that day just incase I get a bit freaked out.
