Advantages: Very very very funny

Disadvantages: Well, none really.

A completely unlikely plot involving terrorists on an oil rig cum tourist resort moored off the west coast of Scotland; a bizarre, but believable, collection of Scottish neds on a school reunion; and a recently retired policeman in his pyjamas are the ingredients for the best comedy thriller of this or any other year.

Dropping Die Hard references by the bucketful, Chris Brookmyre presents a cool, if extremely ironic, blast of high-energy action writing, seasoned with his usual blend of Paisley-inspired insanity.

Without giving too much away about the plot, the novel is a series of brilliant set-pieces as the erstwhile school friends (and enemies) stumble their way towards freedom while trying their damndest to confound the often wildly incompetent bad guys.

Major highlights (for me at least) were the terrorists 'get together' at the start of the book and, best of all, the school smartarse throwing up through a grille onto the main bad guy while crawling (in best action hero mode) through a ventilation shaft.

Read this, then go out and buy the rest of his books. Scotland's answer to Carl Hiassen should not be missed.
