A slightly tongue in cheek self defence book

This isn't normally the sort of book I would read, however it came in a 'lucky dip' box of books I bought on ebid, so I thought I would give it a whirl.

This is essentially a self-defence book. It has a sense of humour! At the beginning there is a line drawing of a weedy, geeky looking man, pointing out all the physical traits of this type of person. Opposite, there is an accompanying paragraph, warning bullies and muggers to beware of this person - the implication being: be aware of the easy looking mark, for they may have read this book and be well-ready to deal with you.

The chapters are classic sucker punches; bar games and bouncers; boxing and wrestling; karate tricks; holding and hitting; fighting with furniture; slapstick; the hard way.

I found this book amazing and really didn't know what to make of it. On the one hand it seems to be, in places, advocating extreme violence. On the other hand, you could think it is justified. After all bullies are scum and need to be dealt with - the best way is to make them see what wrong they are doing and bring them round to a normal way of thinking and acting.

This book though is looking at the hard facts, that sometimes at the time when you are under attack, there is no time for reasoning. You need to hit first - hard - and get outta there.

I must admit I was uncomfortable reading this book. Self defence is a weapon, and self defence needs to be practiced, in order that you can do it safely, if you can see the contradition there. Some self defence can seriously damage the attacking party. That leaves the defender up to their neck in doo-dah, and possibly a prison sentence.

Who will like this book? Well anyone eho has been bullied and feels it is time to take action. Sadly the other persons who are going to be interested in it are Mr Ninja and Mr Bar Room Brawler. The vigilantes of this world are going to enjoy this as well.

Saying that, it is an interesting book.
