Michael Marshall Smith is one of the greatest authors around at the momment, he writes about a future that seems very near, yet is different enough to still keep the hardened sci-fi fan interested. Hap Thomson is a Rem Temp, he looks after other peoples dreams and memories as a safekeeper. Although this is strictly illegal caretakers of dreams can mean a sleepless night before a big meeting or help you deal with problems. When Hap illegaly takes on the memory of a murder he is on the run from forces trying to overtake him. One of Us is the third full novel by Michael Marsall-Smith, and in my opinion, his best. It follows a down-and-out character who is employed by a corporation to dream the dreams of other people for them. But not any old dream - these are the unsettling dreams that leave you feeling drained for the whole of the next day. Soon he is asked to move into a more morally-grey area - temporarally storing memories so people can act without the hindrance of shame or conscience. However, an out-of-hours job leads to the hero being stuck with thr memory of a murder in his head (which would carry the same sentence for him as for the murderer), so he must try and track down ...
