One Red Paperclip - Kyle MacDonald ... trade this paperclip with you for something bigger or better, maybe a pen, a spoon, or perhaps a boot. If you promise to make the trade I will come and visit you, wherever you are, to trade. So, if you have something bigger or better than a red paperclip, email me. Hope to trade with you soon! Kyle PS: I'm going to make a continuous chain of 'up trades' for bigger or better things until I get a house. Kyle MacDonald wanted his own house. The problem was he didn't have a job and he didn't have any money. Thinking back to his childhood he remembered the game he loved to play 'Bigger and Better'. It was a way of trading your old stuff to get bigger and better new stuff. Legend had it, some people managed to trade an old biro for a brand new car! This got Kyle thinking. If that kind of entrepreneurial spirit could turn tiny objects into big ones, then why not try trading up to a house? And then he saw it. One red paperclip, sitting on his desk, holding the pages of his CV together, ready to go out into the world and help him find the job that would eventually get him a house. But that didn't sound nearly as much fun as trading. So he wrote an internet advert hoping to trade one red paperclip. Suddenly his inbox was full of responses. The trading had begun. Did he get the house? You'll have to read his story to find out. He certainly did a lot of trades and met a lot of interesting people, including Alice Cooper. One small paperclip was to be the beginning of a great big adventure.

... you all of the trades, but some of them are very impressive, whilst others seem, on the surface, quite dissappointing. I think my favourite trade was one of the earlier ones when he trades a generator for 'one instant party', which is essentially a beer keg, a neon Bud sign and an I.O.U for some beer. However, it isn't the trades that make this book so interesting, it's how quickly it becomes a story that interests the world over - culminating in a quite amusing story of Kyle MacDonald taking over a row of public pho...more

I am not into reading, and you may discover this through the sheer weight of my reviews that will be on other categories other than books. So, for me to be sitting here reviewing this book makes it special. This is my kind of book. If you are of the younger generation and enjoy these kinds of interesting books about personal experiences, then you will love this book. It is an amazing story of a Canadian who traded up from a standard size red paper clip to a house! Kyle Macdonald was his name. He was in desperate need of a job living on the low side of life. He was at the stage of life where he really wanted his own house, but couldn't possibly afford one ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review What a Trader! (1052 words)

Rating:

The book "One Red Paperclip" is the true story of how Kyle MacDonald traded one, simple, little, red paperclip and kept trading until he ended up with a house, exactly one year later. Isn't that amazing? Of course, some might be appalled by this – trading junk, until you get something of real value, might seem to be a cheap trick. Those who struggled to buy our homes might feel Kyle cheated to get what others sweated for. But it takes gumption, nay, chutzpah to actually attempt this, let alone actually make it happen. Others will say MacDonald is lazy, and Kyle's admitted laziness factors highly here. He wanted a house, but he didn't want to work years to earn ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review One Red Paperclip - Kyle MacDonald: Fascinating Story of a Childhood Game Taken to the Extreme! (428 words)

Travel and reading are my passions, so books like this are a winner every time with me. This is a fascinating story about a man who is on the verge of losing his home and girlfriend, when he decides to trade from 'One Red Paperclip' to a house, in a year, based on a game he attempted to play when he was a child. He travels around Canada and America, making trades and quickly becomes famous in the meantime. The game is called 'bigger and better' and you basically take one item (in this case the red paperclip) and contiually trade it up for something bigger and better. I won't spoil the story by telling you all of the trades, but some of them are very impressive, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review He traded what for a house? One Red Paperclip! (180 words)

Books for people who don't do books... That's my kind of book - Not your usual sensible offering, but an off the wall account of a man and his dream, a dream to do something. Around Halloween time, Canadians play a game of trade up as part of trick or treat. Who can trade useless crap for some less useless crap in an evening? Kyle MacDonald took that concept to the max, deciding to try and trade up a paperclip (sorry, a red paperclip) for a house within 12 months. This book is for all those people like me who believe in the power to change your circumstances just by following a crazy dream, most of us never fulfill that dream, but Kyle was different... he ...  Read the complete review
